Being an entrepreneur is unlike any other profession... I don't think we can even call it a profession... it's just a way of life. So I thought I'd share my 7 things I do for fun and hope I'm not alone in this crazy, mixed-up entrepreneurial world I live in.
Number #1 - Read a good business book
Fiction? What's that? My bedside table is piled high with business books on various subjects and I consider it a blessing to be able to crash into bed and read a few chapters before lights out.
Number #2 - Exploring & creating new ideas
You'll often find me getting out of bed in the middle of the night to write down the latest new idea. This also tends to happen in the shower... basically any time there isn't pen and paper (or word processor) readily available.
Number #3 - Listening to or watching courses & seminars
My iPod is loaded with courses and seminars which accompany me everywhere I go. Sometimes I'll take a long walk on the weekends just to listen to my latest acquisition... or absorb a past favourite one more time.
Number #4 - Oh glorious internet... sacred tomb of knowledge (and procrastination)
From business blogs and articles to social media goodness... the internet has it all. And while the occasional YouTube video and catch up with friends may occur... the rest of the time is spent consuming more delicious content.
Number #5 - Watch The Apprentice
Thanks to The Donald for pushing through when all the TV execs said no-one would watch a business show we're starting to see more business related programming that isn't just talking heads. Another new favourite is Badger or Bust (Sat 7:30pm on TV1).
Number #6 - Mastermind or networking groups
There's nothing like being in a room surrounded by like-minded individuals just as passionate about business as you. It's even worth getting up early in the morning for!
Number #7 - Dream big
Part of being who we are is having "Big Hairy Audacious Goals" (BHAGS) [Built to Last - Collins & Porras] and while you're doing the hard work to make them a reality there's nothing better than sitting back and dreaming about the future. We just have to remember to still get up and do the work afterwards!
Bonus Number #8 - Work on the business
And of course no list of entrepreneurial fun would be complete without mentioning the love we have for creating our business. For sitting around developing new strategies and ideas to improve it. It's something most employees will never understand but the entrepreneurial mind is never shut off... it doesn't work from 9 to 5 like they do. It's just the way we are!
