World Internet Summit - Auckland 2009

The blog has been postless for a few days because I’ve been off at the World Internet Summit held in Auckland. It was a four day seminar with great speakers on all aspects of internet business and marketing. However I think it held a lot for bricks and mortar business owners as well.

Not least was being able to hang around with multi-millionaires and learnt how they grew and continued to grow their businesses. While most of them sold digital information products there were still a lot of marketing lessons to be learnt. Just a few little shifts in perspective gave me some great ideas for my own business.

What I thought might be interesting to share was the final session where each speaker was asked “What is the secret to your success?” Here are the answers from my notes:

Sean Roach - Never give up. You’ll hit walls but just keep going. Chase the dream, not the money.

Raymond Aaron - Find a mentor (he has 9) and use their experience.

Roy Carter - Have laser focus on a project until it’s completed. Don’t get distracted.

James Schramko - Ask better questions. Question everything. To make money create value.

Gail Bottomley - Focus. Don’t turn here or there… focus!

Alok Jain - Focus and persistence. Pick a proven model and stick to it.

Mark Ling - Paying other people to do what he hates. Hiring people who are better than him.

Shaune Clarke - Interviewing people accelerated his business. Don’t focus on what’s going wrong… focus on forward movement. Use dynamic leverage.

Simon Leung - Stopped taking notes and started taking action. Nothing matters if you don’t use it.

Dr Mike - Having a supportive wife and good support system. Be careful who you associate with. Becoming aware that there’s a different way to make money.

Koz - Do something. It doesn’t matter if you fail 100 or 1000 times. Every speaker has failed at least once if not several times. Increase your income step-by-step.

Scott Letourneau - Delegation and time management. Not having an open door policy with staff. Your time is gold. Take action.

In summary:

  1. Find a proven system for getting what you want
  2. Find a mentor who has walked the walk
  3. Take action
  4. Be prepared to fail but never give up
  5. Protect your time and delegate
  6. Surround yourself with supportive people
  7. Focus!

I hope you found this useful. I definitely enjoyed the weekend and look forward to staying in touch with all the people I met. Leave a comment on what you believe is critical to success or just say hi if you were at the event.

Now I’m off to take action on the ideas I learnt!
